Narges Mohammadi's Health Deteriorates in Iran

Post by : Shweta

Iranian human rights activist and 2023 Nobel Peace Prize winner, Narges Mohammadi, is in critical condition in a hospital in Iran. Her family and supporters are urgently appealing for her transfer to a specialized medical facility in Tehran.

After suffering a severe cardiac incident, Mohammadi was moved from prison to a hospital in Zanjan, where she has experienced episodes of unconsciousness and significant health complications. Reports indicate she requires immediate medical intervention.

Her family reported that her condition is unstable, warning that any further delays in relocating her to Tehran could be life-threatening. The Narges Mohammadi Foundation claims that doctors previously advised transferring her to a hospital with better resources, yet security authorities obstructed this request.

Currently, Mohammadi is in a cardiac unit receiving oxygen therapy and close monitoring of her blood pressure. Her family insists that access to her routine medical team in Tehran is crucial due to pre-existing heart issues and ongoing health challenges.

As an acclaimed human rights advocate, Mohammadi has faced numerous arrests and legal challenges due to her outspoken nature. She won the Nobel Peace Prize while incarcerated for her commitment to women's rights and her opposition to the death penalty in Iran.

Her current imprisonment began after alleged politically charged statements during a memorial for lawyer Khosrow Alikordi, resulting in an extended sentence on charges related to national security.

International observers, including human rights organizations and members of the Nobel Committee, have voiced urgent concerns regarding her health. The Norwegian Nobel Committee has called for her immediate release, cautioning that her survival hinges on Iranian authorities' decisions regarding her medical treatment.

Family communication restrictions have hampered updates on her status, leaving her children in France worried about her deteriorating condition.

The situation highlights ongoing human rights abuses faced by political prisoners in Iran, with activists continually alleging neglect of medical care and restrictions on family contact.

Iranian officials have yet to comment in detail about Mohammadi’s current health, while global supporters persist in calling for her urgent hospital transfer to ensure necessary medical attention.

The international community remains vigilant as concerns mount over Mohammadi's health and safety.
