NASA has unveiled an incredible image of the Moon taken by the Artemis II crew during their groundbreaking mission. It showcases the Orientale Basin on the lunar surface, a rarely highlighted feature now captured in remarkable detail.
The Artemis II team consists of four astronauts—Jeremy Hansen, Victor Glover, Reid Wiseman, and Christina Koch—onboard the Orion spacecraft. This marks a historic first human journey toward the Moon since Apollo 17.
The mission's objectives include photographing the Moon’s far side and evaluating deep-space travel capabilities. Artemis II aims to venture more than 400,000 kilometers from Earth, setting new human spaceflight distance records before slingshotting around the Moon and returning without a landing.
Expected to last nearly 10 days, the mission will conclude with a splashdown in the Pacific Ocean. NASA aims to leverage this mission as a precursor for future lunar landings, with ambitions to place astronauts near the Moon's south pole by 2028.
