UAE Unveils Naseej Initiative for Circular Textile Economy

In a significant move towards sustainability, the UAE has launched the ‘Naseej’ initiative, aiming to revolutionize the textile industry with circular economy principles. Spearheaded by President His Highness Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, this ambitious project focuses on mitigating textile waste, projecting a new era of resource-efficient practices.

Naseej is formed through a collaboration involving the National Projects Office, the Ministry of Economy and Tourism, Emirates Foundation, and Tadweer Group. This alliance aims to create a cohesive platform that harmonizes government regulations, industry initiatives, research, and community involvement throughout the textile supply chain.

With annual textile waste in the UAE estimated at around 220,000 tonnes, Naseej is intended to foster a coordinated approach to enhance recycling systems, stimulate innovation, and promote responsible consumption. This initiative reflects the UAE's larger commitment to sustainability and the goal of maintaining materials in circulation.

Naseej is structured around five strategic pillars: Collection and Recycling, Awareness and Outreach, Behavioural Research, Policy and Regulation, and Circular Business Innovation. The objective is to forge sustainable solutions that effectively reduce waste, optimize resource recovery, and inspire eco-friendly business practices.

The groundwork for this initiative was laid during COP28, where debates on sustainable resource management attained traction. Supported by the National Projects Office, Naseej has since advanced through various Memorandums of Understanding with key players across the textile sector, combining expertise from both public and private domains to enact impactful change.

Naseej has plans to launch several national programs aimed at boosting awareness and promoting engagement in sustainable textile practices. One of the initial events is “The Fabric of Possibility,” an interactive community event scheduled at Yas Mall in Abu Dhabi from June 5 to 7.

This event invites residents, families, and tourists to delve into the ecological effects of textile waste, explore viable waste reduction strategies, and understand how individual decisions can contribute to a greener future. Organizers are also preparing to extend similar events to additional regions throughout the UAE in later phases.

Sheikha Mariam bint Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Deputy Chairperson of the Presidential Court for National Projects, highlighted that this initiative embodies a progressive vision, transforming environmental challenges into avenues for positive change. She emphasized the need for responsible resource utilization, active community participation, and the promotion of volunteerism.

Abdulla bin Touq Al Marri, Minister of Economy and Tourism, reinforced that Naseej will create a robust national framework linking policy creation, industry cooperation, and public engagement under a unified vision for the circular economy. He noted that collaborative efforts across various sectors are vital for achieving sustainable growth while minimizing ecological footprints.

The initiation of Naseej represents a crucial milestone in the UAE's journey towards enhancing its sustainable and resilient economy. By tackling textile waste through cooperation, innovation, and community engagement, this initiative aims to significantly influence sustainable consumption and production practices throughout the country.
