Pakistan and Afghanistan Negotiations Halt Amid Border Tensions

Post by : Bianca Haleem

Negotiations between Pakistan and Afghanistan in Istanbul have come to a standstill, as confirmed by Islamabad on Friday. This abrupt halt occurred a day after both parties exchanged allegations over deadly border clashes that threaten to undermine a fragile ceasefire facilitated by Qatar.

Pakistan’s Information Minister Attaullah Tarar reported that discussions have reached “a deadlock” amid ongoing violence at the border. He expressed gratitude to Turkiye and Qatar for their mediation efforts but accused the Taliban of not honoring its 2021 Doha commitments to combat terrorism.

Tarar emphasized that Pakistan “will not tolerate any actions by the Taliban government that may jeopardize regional peace,” reiterating Islamabad’s commitment to its sovereignty while aiming for stability in Afghanistan.

Renewed hostilities erupted after Afghan authorities reported that four civilians were killed and five injured in exchanges of gunfire between Pakistani and Afghan forces along their common border. Conversely, the Pakistani foreign ministry contended that Afghanistan instigated the violence, asserting its forces acted only in self-defense.

Leading the Pakistani delegation in Istanbul is National Security Adviser Asim Malik, while Afghanistan’s team is headed by Abdul Haq Wasiq, the intelligence chief. Mediators are reportedly evaluating Pakistan’s demands aimed at curtailing cross-border militant activities.

The border region has experienced escalating skirmishes since early October, resulting in numerous fatalities on both sides. The United Nations reported a toll of at least 50 civilians dead and over 400 injured in Afghanistan, while Pakistan noted the loss of 23 soldiers.

Islamabad alleges that Kabul is providing refuge to fighters from the Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP), who have been linked to multiple recent attacks within Pakistan. The Afghan Taliban has rejected these claims.

Despite a recent agreement to establish a joint monitoring mechanism, violence continues — highlighting the profound distrust that lingers between the two nations.
