Nepal Stun West Indies to Win Historic T20 Series

Post by : Mariam Al-Faris

Nepal made history in cricket by winning their first-ever T20 series against a full member nation. Ranked 18th in the world, Nepal had never faced a top cricket nation in a full T20 series before this week. Yet, they stunned the world by beating West Indies in two straight games to secure the series with one match left to play.

West Indies Collapse to Record Low

The West Indies team, who are ranked sixth in T20 cricket, suffered a shocking collapse. In the second game of the series, they were bowled out for just 83 runs. This total is now the lowest ever scored by a full member nation against an associate team. Nepal not only bowled them out cheaply but also achieved a 90-run victory margin, which is the largest win ever by an associate side over a full member team.

Recent Struggles for West Indies

This defeat is another major setback for West Indies cricket. Only a few months earlier, their Test team had been bowled out for just 27 runs against Australia, which was the second-lowest score in Test history and the worst in nearly 70 years. After that disaster, Cricket West Indies president Dr. Kishore Shallow called an emergency meeting and sought advice from legends like Sir Viv Richards, Sir Clive Lloyd, and Brian Lara. Despite those efforts, the struggles continue.

Missed World Cup Qualification

West Indies’ decline has been evident for some time. They failed to qualify for the 50-over Cricket World Cup in 2023, a huge disappointment for a nation with such a rich cricketing past. Currently, they are also outside the qualification places for the 2027 World Cup. This defeat to Nepal only adds to the worries about the future of cricket in the Caribbean.

Nepal’s Impressive Batting Display

Nepal showed great determination with the bat in Sharjah. They scored 173 runs for the loss of six wickets in their 20 overs. The highlight of their innings was a 100-run partnership for the fourth wicket between Aasif Sheikh and Sundeep Jora. Jora was especially aggressive, smashing five sixes and taking the attack to the West Indies bowlers. This partnership gave Nepal the confidence they needed to set a strong total.

West Indies Fail to Chase

In reply, West Indies never looked comfortable. They were 63 for 4 in the 12th over but then collapsed completely, losing their last six wickets for just 20 runs. Only three of their batters managed to reach double figures, which shows how badly their batting lineup struggled. Nepal’s bowlers kept up the pressure, and the Caribbean team had no answers.

Nepal’s Growing Confidence

Nepal’s win has boosted their confidence ahead of future tournaments. Coached by Australian Stuart Law, the team will soon play in the qualifiers for the 2026 T20 World Cup. They have already featured in the 2014 and 2024 editions, and now they are looking to make another appearance. Victories like this against a top team will give them belief that they can compete at the highest level.

One Match Still Left

Although Nepal has already won the three-match series, one more game is still left to be played. The third T20 will take place on Tuesday, giving West Indies one final chance to restore some pride. However, with the series result already decided, Nepal will go into the game with nothing to lose and a chance to make it a clean sweep.

Injury Blow for West Indies

Adding to West Indies’ problems, their fast bowler Alzarri Joseph has been ruled out of next month’s two-Test series against India. He has suffered a recurrence of a back injury, which leaves their bowling attack weaker. This is yet another setback for a team already struggling to regain its past glory.

Cricket World Reacts

Fans and analysts around the world have reacted with shock to Nepal’s victory. Many praised Nepal’s hard work, discipline, and fearless style of cricket. At the same time, there is growing concern about the sharp decline of West Indies cricket, which was once the most dominant force in the world. This result may push the West Indies board to take even stronger measures to rebuild their team.

Nepal’s series win over West Indies will be remembered as one of the greatest upsets in cricket history. For Nepal, it is proof that associate nations can compete with the best when given opportunities. For West Indies, it is another reminder of how far they have fallen from their glorious past. As Nepal celebrates, the Caribbean team must find answers quickly to avoid further embarrassment in world cricket.
