Nepal’s new Chief, Kamal Karki, said that recent protests show the hopes and concerns of the young generation. Speaking on Nepal’s national day, which marks the 10th anniversary of the current constitution, she said the demonstrations reflect growing awareness among people and dissatisfaction over increasing corruption.
Failure To Fulfill Constitution Goals
Karki emphasized that the protests happened because the spirit and goals of the constitution—to provide good governance and prosperity—were not fully achieved. She stated that acknowledging this failure is important to understand why citizens, especially young people, took to the streets.
First Public Comments As Leader
These remarks were Karki’s first public comments since her appointment last week. She has been tasked with holding parliamentary elections on March 5. Karki, a former Supreme Court chief justice, is the only woman to have held that position and is also the first woman to lead Nepal.
Impact Of Violent Protests
The recent violent protests, led mainly by young Nepalis and called “demonstrations by Gen Z” by organizers, resulted in 72 deaths and forced Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli to resign. Over 2,100 people were injured, and extensive damage was caused to public and private property, including the prime minister’s office, Supreme Court, parliament building, and luxury hotels.
Government Commitment To Reform
Karki said the government is committed to creating job opportunities, improving quality of life, ensuring transparency, controlling corruption, and promoting development. She assured citizens that reforms will address the reasons behind the protests and restore public trust in governance.
Support From Gen Z And Commitment To Elections
Backed by Gen Z representatives for her commitment to fight corruption and uphold the rule of law, Karki, 73, said she is dedicated to holding elections on time. Her interim government includes three ministers with reformist backgrounds, showing a clear focus on transparency and positive change.
Vision For Nepal’s Future
Karki’s leadership is expected to focus on addressing the concerns of young people, strengthening democracy, and implementing reforms that align with the constitution’s promises. She aims to rebuild confidence in the government and ensure a fair, transparent, and prosperous future for Nepal.
