New West Bank Settlement Approved by Israel, Heightening Regional Tensions

Post by : Saif Al-Najjar

The authorization of a new Israeli settlement in the occupied West Bank has underscored the rapidly evolving situation in the region. What started as an unapproved outpost has quickly transitioned into a fully endorsed settlement named Yatziv within just a month, situated atop a hill with views of the Palestinian town of Beit Sahour, adjacent to Jerusalem.

On Monday, both Israeli settlers and officials came together at the hill to commemorate the occasion. With music resonating in the background, construction activity was in full swing. Israeli soldiers were stationed nearby as families enjoyed food and celebrated what they termed a historic day. Meanwhile, normal activities persisted in Beit Sahour, including the calls to prayer emanating from local mosques.

For many settlers, this achievement symbolizes years of aspiration. They believe the land is significant for Jewish history and is part of a network of settlements around Jerusalem. Over the years, they thwarted attempts to construct a hospital for Palestinian children on this site and awaited an opportune political moment to assert their claim.

This critical moment was reached rapidly. In December, Israeli Finance Minister Bezalel Smotrich declared the official approval of Yatziv along with 18 other outposts. A staunch advocate for the settler movement, Smotrich asserted intentions for a permanent settlement in the area, dismissing the notion of a potential Palestinian state.

Settlers feel emboldened by the prevailing political environment. Israel's far-right government, which has been in power since late 2022, visibly supports expansionist settlement policies. The potential return of Donald Trump to U.S. presidential leadership and a violent incident in the area last November have also fueled settlers' ambitions.

From the Palestinian viewpoint, the ongoing settlement expansion is profoundly alarming. The majority of the international community regards these settlements in the West Bank as illegal under international law. Palestinians argue that these encroachments confiscate their land, limit their mobility, and hinder the formation of a cohesive and independent state, with the West Bank viewed as an essential component of their envisioned nation.

The site where Yatziv now stands bears a long and contentious history. Almost two decades ago, there were plans to establish a hospital for Palestinian children, supported by international consensus, but this initiative faced fierce opposition from settlers and ultimately did not materialize. Subsequently, the area was designated as an Israeli military base, facilitating settlers' transition to establish a lasting foothold.

Former Israeli Prime Minister Ehud Olmert asserted that the transformation of land use to military establishment was pivotal. This change simplified the process of establishing a settlement. He also observed that the current Israeli administration adopts a markedly different approach compared to previous leadership focused on Palestinian cooperation.

The swift recognition of Yatziv exemplifies the accelerating trend in settlement expansions. While settlers regard it as a significant win, for Palestinians, it serves as a worrisome indication that prospects for a two-state solution are dwindling. As these settlements proliferate, the tensions in the area only escalate, complicating efforts toward peace.
