Dodgers Beat Reds 10-5 in Wild Card Series Opener

Post by : Mariam Al-Faris

The Los Angeles Dodgers began their 2025 MLB postseason with a confident performance, defeating the Cincinnati Reds 10-5 in Game 1 of the National League Wild Card Series. The game at Dodger Stadium showcased the team’s offensive power and pitching depth. With this victory, the Dodgers took the lead in the best-of-three series, moving one step closer to the Division Series.

Ohtani and Hernández Lead the Way

Shohei Ohtani and Teoscar Hernández were the key figures in the Dodgers’ win. Both hit two home runs each, setting the pace for the offense. Ohtani’s first homer came in the opening inning, a powerful shot over the right-field wall off Hunter Greene. The crowd roared as Ohtani’s early strike lifted the team’s confidence. Hernández quickly followed with his own home run in the second inning, helping the Dodgers establish control. Later in the game, both added another homer each, underlining their consistency and impact.

Dodgers’ Home Run Record

Tommy Edman added to the tally with a solo home run in the seventh inning. His contribution ensured the Dodgers stayed ahead as the Reds tried to fight back. In total, the Dodgers hit five home runs, tying their franchise record for the most in a playoff game. This display of power hitting gave the team a comfortable advantage and reminded fans of their ability to dominate in crucial moments.

Blake Snell Delivers on the Mound

While the batters grabbed attention, pitcher Blake Snell played a decisive role. Making his first playoff start since 2022, Snell pitched seven innings, conceding only two runs on four hits. He struck out nine batters and walked just one, showing his control and experience. Snell’s calmness on the mound allowed the Dodgers’ hitters to build their lead without pressure, and his performance highlighted why he remains a vital part of the team’s postseason strategy.

Reds’ Late Fightback

The Cincinnati Reds struggled early but showed determination in the later innings. They scored all five of their runs in the final three innings, with Elly De La Cruz playing a standout role. He contributed two RBIs and also scored a run, keeping the Reds’ hopes alive. However, the gap created by the Dodgers’ early runs proved too wide. Despite their late energy, the Reds could not overturn the lead, and the Dodgers secured the opening game.

Tactical Edge for Dodgers

The Dodgers’ approach was clear—strike early with both bats and pitching. Their aggressive strategy paid off, as the Reds were forced to chase from the start. Multiple players contributed, showing the team’s depth beyond its big names. For the Reds, the challenge now is to adjust before Game 2. They must find a way to control the Dodgers’ power hitters and strengthen their pitching if they are to stay alive in the series.

Postseason Experience Matters

The Dodgers’ history of consistent postseason success was evident in Game 1. They combined experience, composure, and execution to minimize errors and take advantage of scoring chances. In contrast, the Reds lack recent postseason experience, and this difference was visible. While the Reds have talented individuals, competing with the Dodgers’ depth and discipline is a challenge they must overcome quickly.

Atmosphere at Dodger Stadium

The crowd at Dodger Stadium played its part in the team’s success. Every big hit was met with loud cheers, especially Ohtani’s and Hernández’s home runs. The atmosphere lifted the players and created a charged environment. Fans also took to social media to celebrate the team’s dominant start, with many praising the five-home-run performance and Snell’s precise pitching.

With this win, the Dodgers are only one victory away from advancing to the National League Division Series, where the Philadelphia Phillies await. They will aim to carry their momentum into Game 2, relying on their strong lineup and consistent pitching. The Reds, however, face an uphill task. They need to make quick adjustments in strategy and execution to even the series. Stopping Ohtani and Hernández will be a top priority for them.

Winning Game 1 in a playoff series often sets the tone. The Dodgers’ 10-5 win gives them confidence and forces the Reds into a must-win situation. Early success in the postseason also allows teams to plan better for future games, knowing where their strengths lie. For the Dodgers, this victory highlights the blend of explosive hitting and reliable pitching, making them strong contenders for a deep playoff run.
