Oman Facilitates Release of Nine Filipino Sailors from Yemen

Post by : Bianca Haleem

Oman’s continued diplomatic engagements have successfully secured the release of nine Filipino sailors held in Yemen for several months after their ship, the MV Eternity C, sank in the Red Sea this year. Their handover to Omani officials marks a significant milestone in a protracted case that began in mid-2025.

This operation was the result of ongoing collaboration between Muscat and the Philippine Department of Foreign Affairs, as reported by the Omani news source Atheer. Representatives from the Philippine Embassy and the Migrant Workers Office in Muscat are currently organizing the necessary travel documents and logistics for the sailors' return.

The situation gained wider diplomatic scrutiny in July when Philippine Foreign Secretary Maria Theresa Lazaro discussed the issue with Oman’s Foreign Minister Sayyid Badr bin Hamad Al Busaidi. A follow-up conversation in November reinvigorated communication, which eventually allowed for negotiations with Yemeni officials.

Following various discreet discussions, the crew has been officially transferred to Omani custody and safely evacuated from Yemen. The repatriation process is anticipated to proceed swiftly, with the sailors' families in the Philippines already informed.

This event underscores Oman’s growing position as a neutral facilitator in regional conflicts. By engaging in continuous dialogue, even amidst complex situations, Muscat has consistently contributed to alleviating humanitarian challenges and guiding conflicts toward peaceful resolutions.
