Oman’s economy made a confident start to the year 2025, with fresh data showing a 4.7% rise in the country’s gross domestic product (GDP) during the first quarter. According to preliminary figures released by the National Centre for Statistics and Information, GDP at current prices touched OMR 10.53 billion, up from OMR 10.06 billion during the same period last year.
A closer look at the numbers reveals a clear story — non-oil sectors are doing the heavy lifting. These sectors, which include agriculture, industries, and services, grew by 4.1%, contributing OMR 7.13 billion to the national output. It’s a positive sign for Oman’s long-term goal of building a more diverse and less oil-dependent economy.
This quarter's highlights included the fishing and agriculture industries, which saw a remarkable 11.1% growth and contributed OMR 326.6 million to the economy. While the services sector remained a solid pillar, rising by 4.2% and accounting for OMR 4.84 billion of the GDP, industrial activities including manufacturing and construction increased by 2.8%, contributing OMR 1.97 billion.
While oil remains a key part of the economy, its performance this quarter was mixed. The overall oil sector grew by 6.8%, thanks mainly to a sharp increase in natural gas activity, which jumped a remarkable 89% and brought in OMR 970.8 million. On the other hand, crude oil activity dipped by 7.5%, pulling in OMR 2.74 billion.
Together, these figures highlight a gradual but steady shift in Oman’s economic landscape. The government’s focus on strengthening non-oil sectors seems to be paying off, and the strong showing from natural gas offers fresh momentum going forward.
With global markets slowly stabilizing and internal sectors showing resilience, Oman’s economy seems well-positioned for continued growth in the months ahead.
