The Royal Oman Police (ROP) has just achieved a remarkable milestone: they won first place in the International Road Federation (IRF) Road Safety Awards. This global honor celebrates their forward‑thinking work to make Oman’s roads safer by harnessing smart technology and deep data analysis. Partnering with Huawei Oman, the ROP has turned cutting‑edge artificial intelligence into a powerful tool for protecting everyone who travels our highways, city streets, and neighborhood roads.
Brigadier Engineer Ali bin Salim Al Falahi, the ROP’s Director General of Traffic, accepted the award on behalf of his team at a warm ceremony in Athens, Greece. Standing before leaders and experts in transport and infrastructure from around the world, he spoke of the months of dedication and collaboration behind this success. It was a proud moment for Oman—and a clear signal that we’re ready to lead in next‑generation traffic safety.
At the heart of this achievement is a “smart traffic control system.” Instead of waiting for problems to show up, the ROP’s system constantly gathers information: how many cars pass through an intersection, where accidents tend to cluster, even how weather or time of day affects driver behavior. Artificial intelligence combs through all that data, highlights risky spots, and suggests targeted changes—whether it’s tweaking a traffic signal’s timing, adding a warning sign, or sending officers to monitor a busy junction. As a result, the ROP has cut down on collisions, lowered response times when crashes do occur, and kept traffic flowing more smoothly.
These efforts tie directly into Oman Vision 2040, our country’s roadmap for a safer, more innovative future. By blending technology and public service, the ROP isn’t just reacting to accidents—they’re preventing them. Families driving home from work, schoolchildren walking to class, and anyone on the road can feel the difference when technology and human care work hand in hand.
The IRF itself is one of the world’s most respected organizations for transport safety and infrastructure advancement. Each year, it shines a spotlight on projects that move the needle on road safety at a global scale. For the ROP to take the top prize means their project stood out among initiatives from scores of countries—proof that Oman’s approach is making waves far beyond our borders.
In practical terms, this award will encourage further investment in smart infrastructure, inspire other agencies in the region, and remind citizens that safer roads are everyone’s responsibility. It’s a testament to the vision and teamwork of the Royal Oman Police, Huawei Oman, and all the engineers, analysts, and officers who worked late nights to turn data into action.
Congratulations to the ROP for showing how innovation, care, and expertise come together to keep us all
