OpenAI Acquires Sky to Embed ChatGPT into macOS Desktop

OpenAI Acquires Sky to Embed ChatGPT into macOS Desktop

Post by : Bianca Haleem

OpenAI has purchased Software Applications Incorporated, the developer behind Sky, a Mac-only natural language interface. The deal is intended to move ChatGPT out of the browser and into users’ regular macOS workflows.

Nick Turley, OpenAI’s Vice President and Head of ChatGPT, announced the acquisition and described Sky as "one of the most thoughtful AI experiences on desktop." Sky allows users to draft text, plan, code and manage tasks using simple natural language, while also interpreting what appears on the screen to act as a contextual assistant for macOS.

OpenAI said the full Sky team will join the company, bringing specialised macOS experience to the ChatGPT product. Turley added that the acquisition "accelerates our vision of bringing AI directly into the tools people use every day," signalling closer ties with native Mac applications.

Sky was developed by a compact, design-driven group led by Ari Weinstein, recognised for creating streamlined, automation-focused interfaces. Weinstein characterised Sky as an AI that "floats over your desktop to help you think and create," aiming to make interaction with computers more natural.

The transaction was led by Nick Turley and Fidji Simo and received approval from OpenAI’s independent Transaction and Audit Committees. An investment fund linked to Sam Altman reportedly held a passive stake in Software Applications Incorporated prior to the acquisition.

With Sky integrated into OpenAI, ChatGPT is expected to transition from a conversational tool to a proactive desktop companion capable of assisting across multiple apps and tasks in real time. The move represents a notable step toward embedding AI into everyday computing.
