Naomi Osaka Beats Fernandez to Reach Wuhan Open Second Round

Post by : Mariam Al-Faris

Japanese tennis star Naomi Osaka made a strong comeback at the Wuhan Open, securing a hard-fought victory over Canada’s Leylah Fernandez. Osaka rallied from a set down to win 4-6, 7-5, 6-3, earning a place in the second round of the prestigious tournament. The win marked Osaka’s first appearance in Wuhan since 2017, and she made it count with an impressive display of resilience and control.

Early Struggles Against Fernandez

In the opening set, Fernandez took charge early, converting one of her two breakpoint chances and serving confidently throughout. Her consistent performance allowed her to take the first set 6-4, giving her the early advantage over Osaka. Fernandez, who famously defeated Osaka at the 2021 U.S. Open, seemed ready to repeat her upset as she maintained pressure from the baseline and forced errors from the Japanese player.

Osaka’s Determined Comeback

The second set saw a different side of Osaka. Determined to stay in the match, she increased the pace of her groundstrokes and began attacking Fernandez’s serve more aggressively. The set featured a series of service breaks — five in total — as both players fought for control. In the end, Osaka’s powerful returns and improved consistency helped her edge out the set 7-5, leveling the match at one set apiece.

Strong Finish in the Decider

In the final set, Osaka regained full control. With her trademark heavy serves and strong baseline play, she pushed Fernandez deeper behind the court and dictated the tempo. Fernandez fought hard, but Osaka’s experience and composure helped her seal the set 6-3. The victory was a reminder of Osaka’s ability to recover and dominate, even when under pressure.

Fernandez Shows Promise Despite Loss

Though she couldn’t repeat her 2021 heroics, Leylah Fernandez displayed her trademark determination and athleticism throughout the match. The young Canadian moved fluidly across the court, challenged Osaka with deep returns, and showcased her growing maturity. Despite the loss, her performance against a top opponent underlined her continued development as one of the sport’s promising talents.

Raducanu Forced to Retire

In another match, British player Emma Raducanu had to retire midway through her first-round encounter against American Ann Li. Raducanu trailed 6-1, 4-1 before leaving the court due to dizziness. Temperatures in Wuhan reached 30°C, prompting officials to apply the tournament’s heat rule to ensure player safety. The incident raised concerns about player conditions in the ongoing competition.

Kenin Battles Through to Second Round

Elsewhere, American Sofia Kenin fought back from a set down to defeat Russia’s Anastasia Zakharova 3-6, 7-6 (5), 6-3. Kenin showed grit and determination, using her sharp groundstrokes and defensive skills to overcome her opponent. With the win, Kenin set up a second-round clash against No. 16 seed Liudmila Samsonova, who earlier defeated Emiliana Arango 6-1, 7-5.

The Wuhan Open continues to draw excitement as top-ranked players battle for the title. With Osaka’s win, she moves one step closer to reclaiming her dominant form ahead of upcoming major tournaments. Fans in China are witnessing some of the best women’s tennis action as the competition heats up in both performance and temperature.
