The much-loved panda twins, Xiao Xiao and Lei Lei, have made their triumphant return to Sichuan, concluding an emotional journey from Japan to their homeland. They arrived at Chengdu’s Tianfu International Airport in the early hours of Wednesday and were subsequently moved to a conservation facility in Ya’an, Sichuan province, where they will undergo a period of quarantine and observation.
Landing at around 1 a.m., the pandas completed their transport to Ya’an by 6 a.m., thanks to a meticulous transfer process. Conservation teams shared visuals of the pandas being gently offloaded from the plane and placed in secure crates. Dedicated staff equipped in protective gear oversaw every part of the journey to ensure the animals' safety and comfort.
Born in 2021 at the Ueno Zoo in Tokyo, the dynamic duo quickly won the hearts of many, drawing large crowds and fostering a deep emotional connection with visitors. Their emotional send-off from Japan was a testament to the affection they garnered as supporters came together to bid farewell to the beloved pandas.
Their parents, Shin Shin and Ri Ri, had returned to China in 2024 following an international cooperation agreement. Per long-established conservation practices, pandas born abroad are generally sent back between the ages of two and four to partake in national breeding, research, and conservation programs.
For years, panda exchanges have highlighted goodwill, cooperation, and cultural ties among nations. These gentle creatures have successfully fostered diplomatic relationships, enhancing public awareness about wildlife conservation across the globe.
Conservation officials emphasized that Xiao Xiao and Lei Lei embody the longstanding friendship between China and Japan, uniting communities through a shared passion for nature and wildlife. Their return epitomizes conservation goals and the ongoing commitment to international environmental collaboration.
Now in Sichuan, the panda twins embark on a new chapter dedicated to health assessments, scientific studies, and enhanced conservation efforts. They will contribute to China's mission to preserve and expand the giant panda population, aiding global wildlife conservation for generations to come.
