Perplexity Introduces Comet AI Browser to Compete with Google Chrome

Perplexity Introduces Comet AI Browser to Compete with Google Chrome

Post by : Bianca Haleem

Perplexity CEO Arvind Srinivas has launched the Comet AI Browser, signalling the company's push into a market long led by Google. On X, Srinivas warned that "leaving the internet in Google’s hands is very dangerous," underscoring Perplexity’s intent to offer an alternative browsing experience driven by AI.

Comet is built on the Chromium engine and remains compatible with Chrome extensions and existing bookmarks to ease user transition. Its integrated AI sidebar can condense articles, help compose emails, organise schedules and perform on-the-fly fact checks. The browser also features workspace organisation, automated content creation and tailored suggestions to streamline online tasks.

Perplexity recently proposed a $34.5 billion bid to acquire Chrome from Google, a figure roughly double Perplexity’s own $18 billion valuation. The proposal included commitments to keep Chromium open-source, preserve default search options and invest $3 billion over two years. This move coincided with pressure from the US Department of Justice for Google to divest Chrome amid antitrust scrutiny, highlighting Perplexity’s assertive strategy in the AI search and browser arena.

Comet is currently available to Perplexity Pro subscribers in India on Windows and macOS, with Android pre-orders open and an iOS release anticipated soon. As part of the launch, Perplexity has partnered with Bharti Airtel to provide a complimentary one-year Pro subscription to qualifying new users.

With Comet, Perplexity aims to challenge Google’s browser dominance and rethink how artificial intelligence enhances everyday web browsing, delivering a more personalised and efficient online experience.
