At a recent Paris auction, a stunning painting by Pablo Picasso was sold for an impressive $31.49 million, captivating art enthusiasts globally. Titled “Bust of a Woman with a Flowered Hat (Dora Maar) 1943”, this piece is thought to represent Picasso’s muse and romantic partner, Dora Maar.
Having resided in a private French family collection since 1944, this artwork had never before been showcased publicly. A single photograph from 1944 served as the only record of its existence, making this auction a landmark moment for collectors and art historians alike.
Drouot auction house reported that the final bid, inclusive of fees, reached 32 million euros, about $37.19 million. The successful bidder attended the auction but opted for anonymity.
Auctioneer Christophe Lucien characterized the painting as “the most poignant work of Picasso involving his muse.” He remarked that the piece captures the essence of a woman stifling her tears, symbolizing the personal turmoil Picasso faced as he prepared to part ways with Dora Maar for another artist, Francoise Gilot.
Art historian Agnes Sevestre-Barbe highlighted that the heirs decided to part with the painting since it couldn’t be divided among them, ruling out a private sale.
This auction underscores the lasting allure and significance of Picasso’s art, especially those creations tied to his personal history. For years, collectors and art aficionados alike longed to witness this intimate portrayal up close.
With its rich historical context, rarity, and emotional resonance, “Bust of a Woman with a Flowered Hat” is set to be a highlight among Picasso's works in private collections globally.
