On Monday, Prime Minister Narendra Modi touched down in Jakarta, commencing his three-nation journey that includes Indonesia, Australia, and New Zealand. He was greeted with a formal welcome by Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto at the airport, a notable diplomatic gesture.
Modi's aircraft was escorted by fighter jets from the Indonesian Air Force upon entering the nation's airspace, highlighting the significance of this visit. A traditional cultural performance also welcomed him upon arrival.
Prior to his departure from New Delhi, Modi indicated that this tour would enhance India's Act East Policy and their MAHASAGAR initiative, aimed at fostering sustainable development and regional security in the Indo-Pacific.
Recalling his previous trip in 2018, when both nations upgraded their relationship to a Comprehensive Strategic Partnership, Modi's visit is the first bilateral engagement in Indonesia since then. This tour follows Indonesian President Subianto's recent visit to India for the Republic Day celebrations in January 2025.
Modi emphasized the enduring civilizational links and strong interpersonal relations between India and Indonesia, expressing optimism that this trip would further solidify their broad partnership.
Collaborations between the two nations currently span various sectors such as trade, defense, maritime security, connectivity, digital technology, and cultural exchanges.
The Indonesian Air Force provided a ceremonial escort for Modi's aircraft once it crossed into their airspace, ensuring its safe landing in Jakarta, as reported by PTI.
Union Parliamentary Affairs Minister Kiren Rijiju later shared footage of the aerial escort on social media.
During his stay, PM Modi is set to interact with the Indian diaspora and visit the Prambanan Temple complex in Yogyakarta alongside President Subianto.
The Prambanan Temple, the largest Hindu temple in Indonesia, symbolizes the profound historical connections between India and Indonesia, situated about 17 kilometers from Yogyakarta.
This visit aims to showcase the shared cultural heritage and emphasize cultural diplomacy in bilateral relations.
Following his time in Indonesia, PM Modi will head to Melbourne at the request of Prime Minister Anthony Albanese.
Discussions in Australia are likely to center on enhancing cooperation in trade, security, critical minerals, and regional stability.
The final leg of his tour will take him to Auckland to meet Prime Minister Christopher Luxon, focusing on strengthening ties in trade, education, and Indo-Pacific collaboration.
Prime Minister Modi's tour underscores India's commitment to bolstering strategic partnerships in the Indo-Pacific, supporting its Act East Policy through enhanced diplomatic ties, economic collaboration, and cultural exchanges.
