At least eight civilians have died during the third consecutive day of violent protests in Pakistan-occupied Kashmir (PoK). Four people were killed in Dhirkot, Bagh district, while two others lost their lives in Muzaffarabad and two more in Mirpur. Earlier reports indicated that two civilians died in Muzaffarabad on Tuesday, bringing the total death toll over the past 72 hours to ten.
Protests Disrupt Daily Life
The unrest, organized by the Awami Action Committee (AAC), has severely disrupted life across PoK. Markets, shops, and local businesses remained closed, and transportation services were halted. Demonstrators clashed with authorities, using stones and large shipping containers to block roads and bridges during marches, particularly in Muzaffarabad. Videos circulating on social media show locals collectively moving containers to obstruct official routes.
Protesters’ Demands
The demonstrators have issued 38 demands, including the removal of 12 assembly seats reserved for Kashmiri refugees living in Pakistan. Protest leaders argue that these seats undermine proper representative governance. AAC leader Shaukat Nawaz Mir emphasized that the campaign aims to secure basic rights denied to the people for over 70 years. Mir warned that the ongoing strike was “Plan A,” with “Plan D” prepared if the demands are ignored.
Government Response
In response to the protests, Islamabad has deployed additional troops and conducted heavily armed flag marches across PoK towns. Reports confirm that an extra 1,000 soldiers have been dispatched from the capital. Internet services have been restricted in the region to curb communication and coordination among protesters.
Background of Tensions
The protests follow a tragic incident last week when 30 civilians were killed in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province due to airstrikes carried out by Pakistan Air Force J-17 fighter jets using Chinese-made LS-6 laser-guided bombs. This event further fueled anger among local communities, already tense due to increasing terrorist activity and the establishment of bases by banned groups such as Jaish-e-Mohammed.
Clashes with Authorities
Demonstrators have faced heavy resistance from security forces. Police and paramilitary units have engaged in dispersing crowds while attempting to maintain control over major towns. The use of force has heightened public anger and intensified clashes, leading to further casualties and property damage.
Impact on Civilian Life
The ongoing protests have disrupted daily life for residents of PoK. Schools, businesses, and public services remain closed in affected areas, affecting thousands of civilians. Transportation has been halted, and local communities face shortages of essential goods and services as the unrest continues.
International and Local Attention
The escalating unrest in PoK has drawn attention from both local and international observers. Human rights organizations have called for restraint and urged the authorities to address the protesters’ demands through dialogue. The situation highlights the growing frustration of civilians over denied fundamental rights and increasing militarization in the region.
Authorities face mounting pressure to resolve the crisis and prevent further civilian casualties. Protest leaders have indicated that if their demands are not met, they will escalate actions, potentially leading to more widespread disruption. The ongoing situation underscores the urgent need for constructive engagement between the government and local communities in PoK.
The unrest in Pakistan-occupied Kashmir reflects deep-seated grievances over governance, civil rights, and security concerns. With casualties rising and tensions escalating, both protesters and authorities must seek solutions to avoid further violence and restore peace in the region.
