The Qatari national basketball team will begin its journey in the Asian qualifiers for the 2027 FIBA Basketball World Cup on Thursday evening. The team will face Lebanon at the Lusail Multipurpose Hall in the opening match of Group D. This match is very important for Qatar because it marks the start of their long road toward earning a place in the World Cup finals, which Qatar will host for the first time in the Middle East.

Group B features Japan, China, South Korea, and Taiwan. Group C has Iran, Jordan, Syria, and Iraq. Qatar is part of Group D along with Lebanon, Saudi Arabia, and India.
From each group, the top three teams will move forward to the second round. After this stage, the qualified teams will be reorganized into two new groups. The competition then becomes tougher because the teams carry forward some of their results from the first round.
At the end of the second round, three teams from each new group will earn direct qualification to the 2027 FIBA World Cup. In addition, the best fourth-place team from the two groups will also qualify. This means that overall, seven teams from the Asian and Oceanian region will secure a place in the final tournament.
Although Qatar is already the host nation, the team aims to perform strongly in the qualifiers to improve its ranking and prepare well for the World Cup.
