Markets have seen a sharp uptick in shares of specialist quantum computing firms, attracting significant interest from both retail and institutional participants. Names such as Rigetti, IonQ, D-Wave and Quantum Computing Inc. are vying to convert laboratory advances into machines capable of tackling problems beyond classical computers.
The sector’s momentum has produced striking gains this year, with several stocks doubling or more. Rigetti, for example, climbed from about $1.06 per share to a high near $58 before retreating to roughly $38—moves occurring despite limited sales and persistent losses. By comparison, larger technology companies such as Nvidia trade at roughly 50 times sales, underscoring the outsized valuations seen among pure-play quantum firms.
Quantum systems promise disruptive applications across industries, from challenging current encryption standards to speeding pharmaceutical research. Major financial and tech organisations are testing use cases: JPMorgan Chase has allocated up to $10 billion for strategic quantum-related investments, while IBM, together with HSBC, is applying quantum approaches to algorithmic bond trading experiments.
Still, analysts warn that excitement has outpaced underlying business metrics. Rigetti’s own projections, for example, estimate revenues of about $21.9 million in 2026, while the company carries a market capitalisation near $13 billion—highlighting a wide gap between market value and forecasted income.
The so-called "Quantum 4" have become unusually active in trading volumes, at times eclipsing major tech names in turnover. Valuing these equities is challenging, with many market participants treating price-setting as speculative. Some investors view current levels as an early entry into a transformative technology, while others worry the appetite for these stocks rests more on hope than measurable progress.
Outcomes will likely depend on technical breakthroughs, commercial adoption, continued corporate and government funding, and investor patience as companies attempt to move from experimental systems to commercially viable products.
