Raghav Chadha Defects to BJP with Six AAP MPs

Post by : Shweta

In an unexpected political shift, Raghav Chadha has officially joined the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), accompanied by six fellow Members of Parliament from the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP). This move poses a considerable challenge to AAP leader Arvind Kejriwal, as it includes a significant portion of the party's presence in the Rajya Sabha.

During a recent press briefing, Chadha revealed that nearly two-thirds of AAP's 10 Rajya Sabha MPs have opted to merge with the BJP. This group features prominent figures such as Harbhajan Singh, Swati Maliwal, Rajinder Gupta, Vikram Sahney, Ashok Mittal, and Sandeep Pathak. Chadha confirmed that the necessary paperwork has been submitted to the Rajya Sabha Chairman, thus formalizing the merger in adherence to parliamentary regulations.

Significantly, this transition is compliant with India's anti-defection law, which permits a merger if at least two-thirds of a party’s representatives consent to it. This legislative clause shields the MPs from disqualification despite the switch in their party allegiance.

Chadha expressed his discontent with AAP, alleging that the party has deviated from its foundational anti-corruption principles. After investing 15 years in building AAP, he asserts the party has become "corrupt and compromised." He believes that aligning with honest politics necessitated his departure.

This political realignment follows heightened friction between Chadha and AAP's leadership. His recent ousting as deputy leader in the Rajya Sabha, along with mounting public clashes, illustrates the growing divide. AAP leaders accused him of failing to support party strategies during parliamentary maneuvers, allegations that Chadha has firmly contested.

In response, AAP officials have termed his departure as a betrayal. Senior member Sanjay Singh criticized Chadha for abandoning the party, which had provided him with significant opportunities. Kejriwal has further claimed that BJP is betraying the people of Punjab.

Following this development, AAP now retains only three MPs in the Rajya Sabha: Sant Balbir Singh Seechewal, Sanjay Singh, and ND Gupta. This loss considerably undermines AAP's national standing, particularly in light of impending electoral challenges.

Reports suggest that Chadha might receive a notable role within the central government post-defection, possibly even earning a ministerial post, though no official word has been given on that front.

This event illustrates the evolving political alignments in India, where internal strife and strategic shifts continue to redefine the political landscape.
