Former Kenyan PM Raila Odinga Passes Away at 80 in Kerala

Post by : Raina Al-Fahim

In a tragic event, former Kenyan Prime Minister Raila Odinga passed away on Wednesday morning in Koothattukulam, Kerala, after suffering a severe heart attack while on his habitual morning walk. He was 80 years old. Odinga was in Kerala for Ayurvedic treatment when he collapsed at approximately 6:30 a.m. and was swiftly taken to Sreedhareeyam Ayurvedic Eye Hospital and Research Centre. Despite the efforts of medical staff, they were unable to revive him. His remains are currently at Deva Matha Hospital in Koothattukulam.

Odinga arrived in Kerala six days ago, accompanied by his daughter and close relatives, adhering to a structured regimen of morning walks and treatments at the Ayurvedic facility. Local officials confirmed the suddenness of the heart attack, which left many in disbelief.

A prominent figure in Kenyan politics for over forty years, Raila Odinga held the position of Prime Minister from 2008 until 2013. His leadership was significant for fostering national reconciliation and implementing constitutional reforms, particularly following the political turmoil and post-election violence of 2007–08. He was instrumental in establishing a power-sharing agreement that stabilized the country, emerging as a respected advocate for dialogue, reform, and democratic principles.

Known for his fervent speeches and deep ties to grassroots communities, Odinga led the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) and stood as one of Kenya’s foremost opposition figures for decades. He contested multiple presidential elections and persistently advocated for a more inclusive political framework, gaining admiration both within Kenya and beyond.

The Kenyan Embassy in New Delhi has been notified and is collaborating with local authorities and the hospital to arrange for the repatriation of Odinga’s body. Tributes and condolences are flooding in from local leaders, members of the Kenyan diaspora, and citizens who honored his contributions to the nation’s democracy. A formal statement from the Kenyan government is anticipated soon.

The passing of Raila Odinga signifies the close of a chapter in Kenyan politics, leaving a profound legacy of leadership, reform, and commitment to his nation.
