Manager and Players Acknowledge the Challenge

Rangers manager Bruce Bochy stressed the urgency of the situation. "We know our backs are to the wall. Now we have to look at it like we have nothing to lose. Go out there and give it everything we got," he said. Designated hitter Joc Pederson added, "We kind of have to play perfect on the way out just to have a fighting chance. It sucks, but it is what it is."

Tyler Mahle’s Form and Usage

Before his injury, Mahle struggled in his final two starts in June, allowing four runs in 11 innings, but earlier in the season, he had consistently limited opponents. In four career starts against the Marlins, Mahle holds a 1-2 record with a 2.74 ERA. To manage his workload, Bochy plans to limit him to 75 pitches in Friday’s opener.

Junk has struggled recently, posting a 0-1 record over his last five starts since Aug. 6, but he has shown signs of recovery, most recently allowing three runs over six innings in a win against Detroit. Miami manager Clayton McCullough praised Junk’s contributions, noting his ability to give the team a solid middle-game performance.
