Researchers have identified two humpback whales that embarked on astonishing migrations from Australia to Brazil, surpassing 15,000 kilometers in their journeys.
Using distinct tail markings, scientists matched images captured in eastern Australia and Brazil over a span of years. Remarkably, the whales swam in opposite directions, marking them as the longest-known migratory humpbacks ever observed.
The findings were published in the journal Royal Society Open Science.
During the study, over 19,000 photographs of whales gathered over four decades were analyzed by researchers and citizen scientists using specialized software to recognize individuals by their tail patterns.
One whale's journey exceeded 15,000 kilometers, outpacing previous record-holders, including a whale that traveled from Colombia to Zanzibar.
Humpback whales are famed for their extensive migrations, typically adhering to routes entrusted to them by their mothers. They primarily feed on krill and small fish in warmer months, migrating to tropical regions for breeding in winter.
However, it is quite rare for whales to change breeding areas, making this discovery notably significant.
Stephanie Stack, co-author from the Pacific Whale Foundation, remarked that this research challenges existing assumptions about the separateness of whale populations across different oceans.
While the exact paths taken by the whales remain uncertain, the photos only captured their starting and ending points.
Experts speculate that these whales may have encountered other groups in shared feeding grounds before heading to different breeding sites, rather than returning to their initial habitats.
Phillip Clapham, former head of a NOAA whale research initiative, labeled this finding as a rare and crucial insight into the extensive reach of humpback whales.
Furthermore, scientists believe this study could illuminate the impact of climate change on whale migratory patterns, as rising ocean temperatures may influence krill distribution and, subsequently, whale feeding and breeding locations.
