The Dubai International Aquatics Championship 2026 was inaugurated on Friday at the iconic Hamdan Sports Complex, achieving a remarkable feat with 1,670 swimmers from more than 100 nationalities participating.
This year’s edition is touted as one of the region’s preeminent aquatics spectacles, hosting over 80 clubs and academies from the UAE and globally. Organisers anticipate a turnout of over 4,000 spectators as the championship progresses until Sunday evening.
Adapted by the UAE Aquatics Federation in partnership with the Dubai Sports Council and Hamdan Sports Complex, the event is officially endorsed by World Aquatics and plays a significant role in athlete rankings for the Dakar 2026 Youth Olympic Games, thereby enhancing its worldwide importance.
During the opening ceremony, Abdulwahid Al Jasmi, board member of the UAE Marine Sports Federation, remarked that hosting such a prestigious event underscores the UAE’s expanding stature as a global nucleus for international sports. He underlined the championship’s commitment to cultivating young talent and promoting excellence in competition.
“We take pride in welcoming over 1,600 swimmers from around the world. This championship is a crucial platform for athletes to exhibit their talents, gain international recognition, and elevate their sports careers,” he stated.
Al Jasmi also pointed out that the organising committee, along with its partners, has implemented superior technical standards and impeccable coordination to ensure an outstanding experience for both participants and spectators.
Currently, the championship is hosting fierce competition across diverse categories, with both emerging talents and established swimmers displaying their skills. The substantial participation highlights the event’s increasing relevance and solidifies its position as a pivotal date on the international aquatics calendar.
