Worker Dies Inside Rome’s Colosseum

A 22-year-old specialist worker died in a workplace accident inside Rome’s ancient Colosseum during the night of September 22-23. Italian authorities identified the worker as Andrea Moretti, who was specialised in high-altitude rope work.

Accident Happened During Lighting Work

According to ANSA, Moretti was working on the installation of a new lighting system at the historic monument when he fell from a height of approximately 10 metres. Emergency medical personnel attempted to resuscitate him, but he died at the scene.

Second Level Closed to Visitors

Following the incident, the Colosseum Archaeological Park announced that the second level, where the accident occurred, would be closed to visitors for the day as a mark of mourning. The area was not initially placed under judicial seizure.

Full Colosseum Closure Reported

Trade unions called for the entire monument to be closed as a mark of respect following the worker’s death. Later reports said authorities ordered the Colosseum to shut for the day. The closure was linked to the response following the fatal workplace accident.

Investigation Into the Workplace Accident

Italian police, the public prosecutor’s office, labour inspectors and workplace safety officials are investigating the circumstances of the death. The Rome Prosecutor’s Office has opened a case related to workplace safety, while authorities are collecting documents and examining what happened. An autopsy has also been ordered.

Culture Minister Offers Condolences

Italy’s Culture Minister Alessandro Giuli expressed condolences following Moretti’s death. The ministry described the incident as a serious workplace tragedy and offered sympathy to the worker’s family and loved ones.

The Colosseum is one of Rome’s most important historic attractions and receives large numbers of visitors each day, particularly during peak periods. Built in the first century, the ancient amphitheatre is one of the best-known monuments of the Roman era and remains a major destination for international tourists.
