Ronaldo Appears to Backtrack on World Cup Dream

Post by : Meena Hassan

Cristiano Ronaldo’s recent remarks seem at odds with what he said after the 2022 World Cup. Portugal’s campaign ended in a shock quarter-final loss to Morocco while Lionel Messi led Argentina to the title, a result many saw as settling the Messi–Ronaldo debate in Messi’s favour.

Following Portugal’s exit in Qatar, Ronaldo wrote on Instagram that winning a World Cup for his country had been the greatest and most ambitious goal of his career, and that placing Portugal at the top of world football was his biggest dream.

But in a fresh interview with Piers Morgan on YouTube, the striker stated:
"I'd say it's NOT a dream for me to win the World Cup."

He challenged the idea that a single tournament should determine a player’s standing, asking whether one competition of six or seven matches is a fair measure of a career.

Ronaldo has appeared at five World Cups, yet the trophy remains elusive. Despite exceptional club achievements, the international prize has proved harder to secure. The 2022 tournament was notable for disappointment — he was left on the bench in pivotal moments, including the 0-1 quarter-final defeat to Morocco that ended Portugal’s run and left the World Cup title still out of reach.
