Russia Launches Attacks on Ukraine Before Zelenskiy-Trump Discussions

Post by : Saif Al-Najjar

On Saturday, Russia executed drone and missile strikes across Kyiv and various other Ukrainian regions, coinciding with President Volodymyr Zelenskiy’s upcoming meeting with former U.S. President Donald Trump. These discussions, set to occur in Florida, aim to explore possibilities for concluding the nearly four-year-long war initiated by Russia’s invasion in February 2022.

Explosions echoed in Kyiv as Ukraine's air defense units sprang into action. The Russian assaults targeted the capital along with the northeastern and southern parts of the country. An air raid alert was issued for several hours, but reports of significant damage or power outages have yet to emerge.

The main hurdle in peace talks remains the control of territory. Zelenskiy stated that a 20-point peace proposal, endorsed by the U.S., is nearly finalized. This proposal includes security assurances from American forces, aiming to prevent further Russian encroachments after past agreements fell short. Zelenskiy hopes that substantial progress can be made before the end of the year.

Trump indicated that the U.S. is at the forefront of initiatives for peace. He looks forward to constructive conversations with Zelenskiy and has aspirations to engage directly with Russian President Vladimir Putin soon. Kyiv seeks lasting, legally binding security assurances, while the U.S. has introduced a renewable 15-year agreement as an option.

Critical discussion points also encompass the control of the Zaporizhzhia nuclear power station, the largest in Europe currently under Russian occupation, and the eastern territories of Donetsk and Luhansk. Moscow insists on Ukrainian withdrawal from portions of Donetsk, while Kyiv calls for an end to hostilities along present frontlines. A U.S. suggestion proposes the formation of a free economic zone if Ukraine retreats from specific areas, though details are under negotiation.

Zelenskiy highlighted that should the U.S. not fully back Ukraine’s territorial stance, the terms of the 20-point plan might be presented for public referendum, contingent on Russia agreeing to a 60-day ceasefire to prepare for the voting process.

Russian representatives have acknowledged differences in perspectives on the peace proposal but displayed cautious hopefulness. Deputy Foreign Minister Sergei Ryabkov referred to the negotiations as a “turning point,” while Kremlin advisor Yuri Ushakov verified ongoing discussions with U.S. officials regarding the plans.

This recent assault underscores the pressing need for a resolution to the conflict. While discussions progress, Ukrainians continue to grapple with the threat of missile and drone attacks. The forthcoming Zelenskiy-Trump talks are anticipated to play a significant role in shaping the future toward peace and stability in the region.
