Russia has launched its hypersonic Oreshnik missile against a target in Ukraine, asserting it as a response to an alleged drone strike by Ukraine on President Vladimir Putin’s residence. Ukraine firmly denies this accusation, labeling it as incorrect and misleading.
The Oreshnik missile, capable of exceeding speeds of ten times that of sound, can be equipped with both nuclear and conventional warheads. Officials confirmed that the deployed missile employed a conventional warhead. According to Moscow, the target included energy infrastructure and drone manufacturing facilities within Ukraine. Reports indicate that attack drones and long-range precision munitions were also utilized during this operation.
The governor of Ukraine’s western Lviv region reported a Russian strike affecting an infrastructure site, with some claims pointing to a significant underground gas storage facility as the target. Ukrainian authorities are currently in the process of evaluating the extent of the damage.
Russia initially deployed the Oreshnik in November 2024, striking a military production plant in Ukraine. That instance employed dummy warheads and resulted in limited damage. President Putin asserts that the destructive capabilities of the Oreshnik’s conventional warheads rival those of nuclear armaments. Nonetheless, Western officials express skepticism regarding its effectiveness in combat.
The missile’s stationing in Belarus underscores Russia’s intention to enhance its strike capabilities across Europe should a broader conflict arise. Analysts caution that deploying hypersonic weapons may heighten tensions in the area and complicate existing peace negotiations.
This incident underscores the perils posed by advanced weaponry in contemporary warfare and the persistent tensions between Russia and Ukraine, which raises alarm over security in Eastern Europe.
