Missile and Drone Assaults Target Ukraine as Zelenskiy Prepares for Trump Summit

Missile and Drone Assaults Target Ukraine as Zelenskiy Prepares for Trump Summit

Post by : Saif Al-Najjar

On Saturday, Russia initiated a series of missile and drone attacks on Kyiv and various other regions of Ukraine, just hours prior to President Volodymyr Zelenskiy’s expected discussions with former U.S. President Donald Trump in Florida. These talks are focused on exploring a potential resolution to the nearly four-year-long conflict, which has become the deadliest in Europe since World War II.

Explosions were reported throughout Kyiv as air defense systems engaged the incoming threats. Russian drones targeted not only the capital but also northeastern and southern parts of the nation. An air raid alert persisted for several hours, leading to injuries reported among at least eight individuals.

The assaults resulted in the temporary closure of two airports in southeastern Poland, namely Rzeszow and Lublin, prompting Polish fighter jets to respond. Notably, there has been no official statement from Russia on the strikes. Earlier this week, Russian military actions had already targeted Ukraine’s energy infrastructure, alongside escalated attacks near Odesa, Ukraine’s primary port.

The most contentious issue in the ongoing peace talks remains territorial control. Zelenskiy mentioned that a 20-point peace plan backed by the U.S. is nearing 90% completion. A security guarantee agreement with the U.S. is on the verge of finalization, an essential measure given that previous promises have failed to deter further hostilities. Zelenskiy conveyed optimism that significant decisions could be reached ahead of the New Year.

Prior to their meeting, both Zelenskiy and Trump are set to engage in a discussion with European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen and other leaders from Europe. Kyiv is advocating for enduring, legally binding security guarantees, while the U.S. has proposed a 15-year renewable agreement. Trump has indicated positivity regarding the talks and expressed a desire to eventually communicate with Russian President Vladimir Putin.

Further significant topics that are being addressed include the status of the Zaporizhzhia nuclear power plant, which is currently under Russian control, along with the conflicts in eastern Donetsk and Luhansk regions. Moscow seeks a Ukrainian withdrawal from certain Donetsk territories, whereas Kyiv is advocating for a cessation of hostilities along established frontlines. A compromise suggested by the U.S. entails the establishment of a free economic zone, conditioned on Ukraine's withdrawal from select areas, though deliberations are still ongoing.

Zelenskiy mentioned that if the U.S. does not wholly endorse Ukraine’s territorial claims, the 20-point peace initiative might be presented for public referendum, contingent upon Russia's acceptance of a 60-day ceasefire to facilitate the necessary preparations. Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Sergei Ryabkov acknowledged discrepancies between Ukraine’s proposal and Russia’s version but highlighted that negotiations have reached a “turning point.” Kremlin aide Yuri Ushakov confirmed discussions with U.S. officials on these proposals, yet did not disclose Russia's stance.

The recent attacks highlight the urgency surrounding the peace talks. While diplomatic measures are underway, millions of Ukrainians continue to face the threat of missile and drone assaults. The forthcoming Zelenskiy-Trump meeting could play a pivotal role in resolving the decades-long turmoil through diplomatic efforts.
