In the early hours of Monday, Kyiv faced a devastating assault as Russian missiles and drones targeted the capital, resulting in the deaths of at least nine individuals and injuring 46 others, according to local authorities. The attack inflicted significant damage on residential buildings, occurring just days after one of the most devastating strikes this year.
Emergency response teams have been tirelessly engaged in rescue operations, searching for potential survivors trapped in the debris. Officials have warned that the casualty figures may rise further as operations continue.
Mayor Vitali Klitschko reported via Telegram that rescuers are working diligently to extract residents from heavily impacted apartment buildings.
Tymur Tkachenko, head of the military administration in Kyiv, confirmed the rising death toll, stating, "Regrettably, this information is not final," as rescue missions persist across the city.
Emergency services indicated that numerous residential buildings sustained damage or destruction throughout various districts of Kyiv.
One particularly hard-hit area was a nine-storey building located in the historic Podilskyi neighborhood, which suffered extensive damage from the fifth floor upwards. Rescuers utilized ladder trucks to reach those trapped above.
Search efforts were also underway at a 21-storey residential structure in the same locality, with Tkachenko revealing that four buildings in Podilskyi were directly impacted by the assault.
In the eastern Darnytskyi district, two fatalities were reported when debris struck a 25-storey apartment complex, according to Mayor Klitschko.
Additionally, a fire erupted in a 30-storey residential building nearby, necessitating the evacuation of residents.
This incident follows a significant attack on Kyiv just days prior, which resulted in the deaths of 31 individuals, marking it as the deadliest assault on the city this year.
The recent onslaught has led to widespread destruction in residential areas, compelling emergency services to remain actively engaged in rescue efforts.
Witnesses reported multiple explosions occurring in and around Kyiv during the offensive, while Ukrainian air defense systems responded to the threat of Russian drones.
Images from the scene captured rescuers navigating through the rubble and carrying injured individuals on stretchers, surrounded by a cloud of smoke.
The repercussions of the strike were felt in areas beyond the capital as well.
Mykola Kalashnyk, governor of the Kyiv region, noted that one person lost their life, and at least 15 others were injured in the surrounding area.
Additionally, Serhiy Lysak, head of the Odesa local administration, reported that the city endured an attack, resulting in at least one injury.
In response to the Russian attack, Poland, a NATO and EU member, temporarily dispatched fighter jets as a precaution.
Earlier, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy had alerted citizens to the possibility of an impending strike from Russia.
