China and Russia Launch Joint Naval Drills Near Qingdao

Post by : Bianca Haleem

This week, China and Russia are embarking on their annual naval drills, taking place in the waters and airspace off China's east coast. A statement released by the Chinese Ministry of Defence on Sunday confirmed that these exercises will occur near Qingdao, involving a diverse array of naval and aerial operations. Once the drills conclude, the two nations intend to engage in joint maritime patrols in unspecified locations within the Pacific Ocean. This initiative is part of a longstanding military collaboration, with both countries regularly conducting maritime training sessions over the last decade.

Troop Deployment for Joint Naval Exercises

Preparations for the upcoming exercises are advancing with Russian state media indicating that several ships from Russia’s Pacific Fleet have arrived in Qingdao. The participating Russian forces consist of a cruiser, a corvette, a diesel-electric submarine, and a rescue vessel, showcasing a wide range of naval capabilities. From the Chinese Navy, the Northern Theatre Command has confirmed it will deploy two destroyers, a frigate, a submarine, a supply vessel, and a rescue craft. This combined deployment illustrates the magnitude of the exercise and reflects the ongoing strategic coordination between these two neighboring nations as they prepare for both maritime and aerial operations.

Focus on Reconnaissance and Defensive Exercises

The joint exercises will unfold from Monday until July 13, featuring numerous military training activities aimed at bolstering operational synergy between the two navies. According to Chinese military officials, the exercises will encompass reconnaissance missions, air and missile defense drills, and surface-strike operations. These tasks will assess communication, coordination, and response skills, enabling both navies to train in realistic conditions. The drills will initially occur in waters and airspace surrounding Qingdao, transitioning into joint maritime patrols in the Pacific Ocean after the completion of the formal training.

Naval Drills Following Leadership Dialogues

These naval activities happen about two months after Russian President Vladimir Putin's visit to China, where he engaged in discussions with Chinese President Xi Jinping. During their talks, both leaders underscored the robust nature of bilateral ties and reaffirmed their commitment to enhanced collaboration. Putin described the Russia-China relationship as reaching an 'unprecedentedly high level,' while Xi characterized the partnership as 'unyielding.' The forthcoming naval maneuvers align with these high-level diplomatic discussions, showcasing the enduring strategic alliance between the two countries on both political and military fronts.

Joint Sea Exercises Highlight Long-Term Collaboration

Since 2012, China and Russia have regularly conducted Joint Sea exercises, making it one of the most visible demonstrations of their military cooperation. The exercises have taken place in various locations and have incorporated a variety of naval training activities. Last year's edition was conducted near Vladivostok, Russia, and was similarly followed by joint patrols in the Pacific. The ongoing annual drills reinforce the enduring nature of defense cooperation between Beijing and Moscow, emphasizing their intention to maintain regular military collaboration through joint training initiatives.

China's Neutral Stance on the Ukraine Situation

China has remained consistent in its position as a neutral entity regarding the Russia-Ukraine war, continuously advocating for peace talks aimed at resolving the conflict. Beijing has not publicly condemned Russia's full-scale invasion of Ukraine, a stance that has spurred global scrutiny. While nurturing its diplomatic and economic relationship with Moscow, China has expressed support for achieving a peaceful resolution through dialogue. As the two nations strengthen ties in defense, trade, and diplomacy, the latest joint naval exercises underscore their growing cooperation.
