Missile and drone attacks hit Kyiv and surrounding region as Ukraine reports heavy casualties

At least 12 people have been killed and 20 others injured following overnight Russian missile and drone strikes on Kyiv and the surrounding region, according to Ukrainian officials. Two children were among those injured in the latest wave of attacks.

Six of those killed were railway workers employed by Ukraine's state railway company, Ukrzaliznytsia, after a railway depot was hit in Kyiv. The attack triggered fires across three districts of the Ukrainian capital and caused emergency crews to work through the night.

Kyiv Hit by Sustained Russian Attacks

Eight people were reportedly killed in Kyiv, while another four died in the nearby city of Boryspil after a residential building was struck. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said that nearly 350 rescue workers were deployed in Kyiv and the surrounding region following the attacks.

Zelensky said Russia had launched a significant number of drones and ballistic missiles during the overnight assault. The latest strikes come after several consecutive days of Russian missile and drone attacks on the Ukrainian capital.

Railway Workers Among Those Killed

The deaths of six railway workers have highlighted the impact of the strikes on Ukraine's transport infrastructure. The depot hit during the attack was connected to the state railway company, according to officials.

Ukraine's railway network remains an important part of the country's civilian transportation system, moving passengers and essential supplies despite the continuing war. The latest attack adds to the pressure on infrastructure that has repeatedly been targeted during the conflict.

India Also Drawn Into the Latest Tragedy

Ukrainian authorities said an Indian national was among those killed in the overnight attacks. Ukraine's Interior Minister Ivan Vyhivsky later identified the victim as a 26-year-old Indian man who was killed in Boryspil on his birthday.

The attack comes one day after Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi called on Russian President Vladimir Putin to work toward ending the war. Modi made the remarks at a security summit in Kyrgyzstan, urging greater movement toward peace.

Russia Says It Targeted Military and Energy Sites

Russia said its forces carried out what it described as a massive strike using high-precision weapons. Moscow said the attacks were directed at Ukrainian military and energy facilities.

Ukraine, however, reported significant civilian casualties and damage in Kyiv and surrounding areas. The latest assault is part of a broader pattern of intensified Russian aerial attacks, with Ukrainian officials warning that repeated strikes are putting pressure on the country's air-defence systems.

Wider Attacks Across Ukraine and Russia

According to Zelensky, eight other Ukrainian regions were also attacked during the overnight operation. The latest strikes follow a deadly Russian attack on a weapons depot in the Kyiv region on Friday that reportedly killed 38 people and triggered explosions involving ammunition, mines and drones.

Meanwhile, Ukraine carried out a separate drone attack against the Russian Baltic Sea port of Ust-Luga, where a fire was reported. Ukrainian authorities have argued that such facilities are legitimate military-related targets because the port handles large volumes of petroleum products that contribute to Russia's economy.

War Continues Despite Calls for Peace

The latest escalation comes despite renewed diplomatic calls for an end to the war. Prime Minister Modi has repeatedly urged Putin to pursue peace since Russia launched its full-scale invasion of Ukraine in February 2022.

The continuing attacks demonstrate the difficulty of achieving an immediate ceasefire as both sides continue long-range strikes. With civilian areas, transport infrastructure and energy facilities remaining vulnerable, the humanitarian impact of the conflict continues to grow.
