Samsung has upgraded its wearable health toolkit with the Galaxy Watch 8, unveiling an antioxidant index that the company says brings clinical-style readings to consumers after extensive development.
Previously limited to laboratory and medical settings, antioxidant measurements are used to evaluate oxidative stress. Samsung’s new feature aims to make that information available on a wrist-worn device, offering actionable insights on diet and nutrition that were once only accessible through specialised testing.
The Watch 8 pairs advanced sensors with on-device algorithms to interpret health signals and present users with a straightforward antioxidant score. That output can inform dietary choices, meal timing and other daily habits, and when combined with the watch’s existing metrics it creates a more complete picture of wellbeing.
Work on the antioxidant capability dates back to 2018, reflecting a multi-year effort to narrow the gap between clinical monitoring and consumer wearables. Some health professionals caution against relying solely on consumer devices, but early feedback indicates the feature could be a useful tool for everyday health awareness.
Samsung expects the Galaxy Watch 8 to be the first model to ship with this capability, with the possibility of enabling parts of the feature on older Watch 7 and Watch 6 units via software updates. The move also tightens competition with rivals such as Apple, which has emphasised health functions in its smartwatch line.
By introducing the antioxidant index, Samsung is extending the scope of what wearables can measure and offering consumers a new way to monitor and manage their health day to day.
