The ongoing conflict in Yemen has intensified, prompting a stern warning from the Saudi-led coalition to the Southern Transitional Council (STC). This coalition underscored its readiness to respond decisively if military actions in the eastern province of Hadramout disrupt peace initiatives and jeopardize civilian safety.
This warning follows grave concerns from Yemen’s Presidential Leadership Council about the security situation in Hadramout. Rashad al-Alimi, the council head, called on the coalition to intervene and shield civilians from alleged violations by armed groups associated with the STC. This raises fears that the emerging power dynamics in southern Yemen may reignite violence.
As Yemen's primary southern separatist entity, the STC receives support from the United Arab Emirates. Recently, it has significantly extended its control throughout southern Yemen, having expelled the Saudi-backed, internationally recognized government from Aden. Such rapid territorial gains have raised alarms among regional stakeholders, who worry it may reverse fragile progress in peace efforts.
Earlier this month, STC forces expanded into new territories, including parts of Hadramout and Mahra. Saudi Arabia has urged the STC to retract its advances, but the group has declined. Instead, they announced their intention to persist with what they regard as security operations in the eastern regions, escalating tensions among past allies in the anti-Houthi coalition.
Saudi Defence Minister Prince Khalid bin Salman reached out directly to STC leaders, advocating for acceptance of Saudi-Emirati mediation and the resolution of disputes via dialogue. He implored STC forces to withdraw from their recent captures and peacefully transfer control to local authorities.
Furthermore, the minister emphasized that a resolution to Yemen's “southern issue” should stem from mutual agreement and trust among Yemenis. He warned that resorting to force would only empower the adversaries of Yemen and exacerbate internal divisions. His appeal reflects escalating worries that internal conflicts could undermine broader political reconciliation efforts.
Yemen has been embroiled in conflict for over ten years, leaving millions reliant on aid and pushing the nation toward collapse. Renewed clashes, particularly in the relatively stable Hadramout region, could severely aggravate the humanitarian crisis and stall peace prospects.
For now, the Saudi-led coalition reaffirms its commitment to de-escalation while underscoring that the safety of civilians remains non-negotiable. The STC's choice between dialogue and violence may determine the future trajectory of Yemen's quest for stability.
