Saudi Arabia Lifts Security Alerts
Saudi Arabia lifted security warnings in four southern cities on Monday after a series of Houthi missile and drone attacks increased security concerns along the Kingdom's border with Yemen. The Saudi Civil Defense initially issued alerts for Najran, Khamis Mushait, Jazan and Abha before declaring the areas safe.Fresh warnings were later issued for Khamis Mushait and Abha before authorities lifted those alerts as well. The developments came after several days of attacks targeting southern Saudi Arabia, including civilian and economic facilities.

Houthi Attacks Injure Dozens
The latest escalation follows a projectile attack that struck Al-Tuwal governorate in Jazan on Saturday. According to Saudi Civil Defense, two people were injured, while a mosque, buildings and vehicles were damaged.Earlier Houthi attacks on Abha, Khamis Mushait, Jazan and Najran reportedly injured 73 people, including women and children. The repeated attacks have increased concerns over the security of communities and infrastructure in southern Saudi Arabia.
Regional Groups Condemn the Attacks
The Houthi attacks have triggered strong condemnation from Gulf, Arab and Muslim organizations. The Gulf Cooperation Council, Muslim World League and Organization of Islamic Cooperation expressed support for Saudi Arabia and condemned attacks against its territory and critical infrastructure.Qatar, Bahrain, Oman and Egypt also expressed solidarity with Saudi Arabia. Pakistan's Prime Minister Muhammad Shehbaz Sharif condemned the attacks during a phone call with Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman and reaffirmed support for the Kingdom's sovereignty and territorial integrity.
Saudi Oil Pipeline Comes Under Threat
Security concerns have also extended to Saudi Arabia's energy infrastructure. Several drones launched from Iraqi territory targeted the Kingdom's East-West oil pipeline, causing injuries and material damage in the Riyadh and Madinah regions.Saudi Arabia temporarily shut the pipeline as a precaution while specialized emergency teams secured the facility and assessed the damage. Riyadh also decided not to retaliate immediately after Iraqi Prime Minister Ali Al-Zaidi requested an opportunity for Baghdad to prevent its territory from being used for attacks against Saudi Arabia and neighboring countries.
Why the East-West Pipeline Matters
The approximately 1,200-kilometre East-West pipeline carries Saudi crude from oil fields in the eastern part of the Kingdom to Yanbu on the Red Sea. The route provides Saudi Arabia with an alternative pathway for exporting crude without depending entirely on the Strait of Hormuz.The pipeline's strategic importance has increased as tensions threaten regional shipping and energy infrastructure. Any prolonged disruption could create additional pressure on global oil markets and increase concerns about the reliability of energy supply routes.
Bab Al-Mandab Security Concerns Grow
Attention is also turning toward the Bab Al-Mandab Strait, a crucial maritime route connecting the Red Sea with the Gulf of Aden and the wider Indian Ocean. The Houthis' military presence along Yemen's western coast has raised concerns about further threats to commercial shipping.Houthi attacks on vessels in the Red Sea have previously forced some shipping companies to take longer routes around the Cape of Good Hope. Such diversions can increase transportation costs, extend delivery times and put additional pressure on international trade.
Yemen Conflict Adds to Regional Risks
The latest Saudi security concerns are developing alongside renewed tensions inside Yemen. Yemeni government forces have warned that the Houthis could be preparing for another offensive around Marib, a strategically important province that has remained under government control.Marib is important because of its oil and gas resources, military facilities and key infrastructure. It also hosts more than two million displaced people. The Houthis launched a major campaign to capture the province in 2021, but the offensive largely subsided after the UN-brokered truce in April 2022.
Saudi Arabia Faces a Wider Security Challenge
The latest developments have placed Saudi Arabia at the centre of a wider regional security challenge involving Yemen, Iraq and major international waterways. Riyadh's immediate priority is to protect civilians and critical infrastructure while avoiding a broader escalation.The combination of Houthi attacks in southern Saudi Arabia, the strike on the East-West Pipeline and growing concerns around Bab Al-Mandab highlights the vulnerability of regional energy and shipping routes. Any major disruption involving Bab Al-Mandab or the Strait of Hormuz could place further pressure on global oil markets and make alternative export routes even more important.
