Under the patronage of H.H. Sheikh Sultan bin Ahmed bin Sultan Al Qasimi, Deputy Ruler of Sharjah and President of the University of Sharjah (UOS), the emirate will host the Arab-German Conference on Science and Humanities from 17 to 20 November 2025.
This four-day meeting will convene more than 100 academics and researchers from upwards of 40 universities and research centres across the Arab region and Germany. Organised in partnership with the Arab-German Young Academy of Sciences and Humanities (AGYA), the conference aims to deepen research cooperation and open new channels for joint projects.
On the third day, sessions will take place at the University of Khorfakkan, underlining Sharjah’s drive to broaden access to research across its territory. The event has backing from internationally recognised institutions including Cambridge University, Technical University of Munich, Cairo University, United Arab Emirates University and Sultan Qaboos University.
Programme topics will span health sciences, technology and space, innovation, sustainable smart cities, and the social and human sciences. A central goal is to enable early-career researchers to build durable networks, share expertise and launch collaborative initiatives that address regional and global research priorities.
Delegates are expected to include university presidents, subject specialists and representatives from organisations such as UNESCO and the World Bank, reflecting the event’s international scope. Confirmed speakers include Prof Claudia Derichs (Humboldt University, Germany), Prof Thomas Silveira (Harvard University), Dr Gina El Feki (Academy of Scientific Research and Technology, Egypt), Dr Bassam Alam Eldin (American University of Ras Al Khaimah), Dr Mohamed Yahya (Ministry of Higher Education and Scientific Research, Mauritania) and Dr Erik Hansalik (German Federal Ministry of Research, Technology and Space).
Workshops and panel sessions will address issues including water sustainability, the role of higher education in building international partnerships, space research and the contribution of universities to sustainable development. The conference is designed to foster practical collaboration and joint research that supports sustainable growth.
AGYA, which is headquartered in Berlin with a regional office in Egypt, plans to open a new office at the University of Sharjah to coordinate activities across the Gulf Cooperation Council. The move highlights Sharjah’s expanding role as a regional hub for international research collaboration.
