Enhancing Water Security: Sheikh Hazza Bin Zayed Addresses Al Ain's Groundwater Safeguarding

Post by : Bianca Haleem

His Highness Sheikh Hazza bin Zayed Al Nahyan has evaluated ongoing strategies aimed at safeguarding groundwater resources and reinforcing water security within Al Ain. The initiative prioritizes improved water utilization, the integration of cutting-edge irrigation technologies, and the increased recirculation of treated water for industrial use.

This assessment occurred during a meeting with a delegation from the Environment Agency – Abu Dhabi (EAD), headed by Dr Shaikha Salem Al Dhaheri. They examined existing and upcoming initiatives intended to conserve groundwater supplies, enhance emergency response protocols, and bolster monitoring efforts to avert depletion and contamination.

In the course of the discussions, Sheikh Hazza underscored the necessity of reconciling developmental objectives with environmental preservation. He called for innovative approaches and closer community collaboration to advocate responsible water usage and ultimately secure long-term water availability in accordance with the UAE’s sustainability goals.

Officials also deliberated on regulations concerning groundwater extraction and the prevention of unauthorized well drilling, particularly in agricultural settings. These initiatives aim to safeguard water supplies and encourage sustainability. Awareness initiatives and incentive programs are being launched to educate farmers and livestock producers about the hazards associated with unregulated water withdrawal.

The EAD delegation further shared its future goals outlined in its 2026–2030 strategy, which include targeted programs to conserve natural resources, bolster water security, and uphold ecosystem sustainability throughout the Al Ain area.

Concluding the meeting, the EAD representatives expressed their gratitude to Sheikh Hazza bin Zayed for his unwavering support, reaffirming their dedication to environmental protection and effective resource management for future generations.

Senior officials present included Sheikh Mohammed bin Hamdan bin Zayed Al Nahyan and Engineer Faisal Ali Al Hammadi.
