Sharjah Launches Youth Theatre Award to Boost Arab Arts

Post by : Mariam Al-Faris

His Highness Sheikh Dr Sultan bin Mohammed Al Qasimi, Ruler of Sharjah and Supreme President of the Arab Theatre Institute, chaired a key Board of Trustees meeting at the Institute’s headquarters in Al Hira, Sharjah. The meeting focused on strengthening the Arab theatre scene and promoting young talent across the region.

Launch of Sultan Al Qasimi Youth Theatre Award

During the meeting, His Highness unveiled the “Sultan Al Qasimi Award for Youth Theatre Excellence.” The award is an Arab-wide recognition celebrating the creativity, talent, and contributions of young theatre artists. It aims to motivate emerging performers and encourage innovation in theatre productions across the Arab world.

Promoting Theatre in Schools

His Highness emphasised the importance of introducing theatre in schools. By prioritising school theatre through national and Arab festivals, students can develop an early appreciation for the arts. This initiative is designed to foster cultural awareness, creativity, and a deeper understanding of the educational and societal value of theatre.

Establishing the Arab Centre for Documentation

Plans were shared to create the Arab Centre for Documentation, Studies, and Research. The centre will focus on recording theatrical heritage, supporting academic research, and encouraging comparative studies. It aims to broaden knowledge of Arab theatre in a global context and preserve its historical and cultural significance.

Academic Training for Emerging Artists

His Highness highlighted the role of academic training for young talents. The Sharjah Performing Arts Academy offers undergraduate and postgraduate programmes to equip students with essential artistic and technical skills. These programmes ensure that emerging artists are prepared to sustain theatre excellence and contribute meaningfully to the Arab arts ecosystem.

Sharjah Theatre Days and Year-Round Initiatives

Sharjah continues to invest in theatre through events like the Sharjah Theatre Days. Now supported by a permanent budget, this initiative allows performances to reach audiences across all Emirates throughout the year. The focus is on making theatre accessible to wider audiences and promoting cultural engagement across communities.

School Theatre and Teacher Training

Ongoing efforts in school theatre include teacher training and curriculum development. These programmes ensure students gain early exposure to performing arts, helping them develop confidence, creativity, and communication skills. Schools are becoming key platforms for nurturing the next generation of Arab theatre talent.

Collaboration and Knowledge Sharing

By bringing together theatre professionals and Arab Council members, the meeting reinforced the importance of collaboration and strategic support. Sharing expertise, experiences, and resources will help advance theatre in the Arab world and create opportunities for young artists to grow and excel.

The initiatives reflect Sharjah’s ongoing commitment to fostering creativity, preserving cultural heritage, and making theatre accessible to all. The award, academic programmes, and research initiatives are designed to strengthen the Arab theatre ecosystem while inspiring new generations of performers and audiences.

The launch of the Sultan Al Qasimi Youth Theatre Award, combined with educational and cultural initiatives, positions Sharjah as a regional hub for theatre excellence. These steps ensure that Arab theatre continues to thrive, promote creativity, and engage audiences across schools, communities, and the wider Arab world.
