Mexico's President Claudia Sheinbaum experienced a disturbing episode while greeting citizens in downtown Mexico City on Tuesday. An apparently intoxicated man moved toward the president, attempted to touch her and leaned in as if to kiss her before a government official intervened.
Online video of the encounter shows Sheinbaum staying calm, gently pushing the man's hands away while smiling and saying, "Don't worry." The president's office has not yet issued a formal comment about the incident.
Sheinbaum is noted for keeping close ties with the public, frequently taking selfies, shaking hands and engaging people on the street — a style similar to that of her political mentor, former President Andrés Manuel López Obrador. Despite visible security, the footage suggests the man briefly breached her personal space before being restrained.
The episode unfolds amid heightened concern over political violence in Mexico, including the public killing of a mayor in Michoacán. On Tuesday, Sheinbaum met with the slain mayor's widow as part of ongoing efforts to address safety and governance challenges.
The incident underscores the challenge for public figures in balancing openness with protective measures at a time of growing worries about public safety.
