A 35-year-old man intentionally drove his car into pedestrians and cyclists on the French Atlantic island of Oléron on Wednesday, wounding 10 people, four of them seriously, officials said. The crash happened along the main route between Dolus d'Oléron and Saint-Pierre d'Oléron, a popular area for visitors.
The suspect, who lives on Oléron, was taken into custody and reportedly shouted "God is the greatest" in Arabic when arrested — a phrase sometimes linked to Islamist extremism. Police detained him on suspicion of attempted murder while they continue to examine his motives.
Authorities said the driver appeared to deliberately target multiple people across several kilometres. Emergency teams transported the injured to nearby hospitals, and police cordoned off the scene as they launched a full inquiry.
Local officials called the episode deeply unsettling for the community. Investigators are working to clarify the circumstances, evaluate any ongoing risk and reassure residents and visitors.
The incident adds to recent worries about deliberate vehicle attacks in public spaces and has led to increased vigilance by law enforcement across France.
