Cutting Rice or Roti Not Required for Weight Loss, Coach Says

Post by : Samir Qureshi

Many people now assume that removing staples like rice and roti is essential to shed pounds, blaming carbohydrates for weight gain. Fitness coach and sports nutrition specialist Jeet Selal disputes that claim, saying total elimination of carbs is unnecessary and can be detrimental to health.

Selal notes that carbohydrates supply the energy the body needs for everyday tasks—walking, work, study and exercise. Abruptly cutting carbs can lead to fatigue, reduced focus and weakness. He warns that some low-carb plans produce quick results but are often short-lived and may cause health problems.

He emphasises that losing body fat is not achieved by removing a single food group. Effective fat loss depends on how the body balances energy. Selal recommends three core steps: maintain a modest calorie deficit, consume enough protein to preserve muscle, and include regular movement or exercise every day.

According to him, a balanced approach to lifestyle beats strict, restrictive diets. People can still include rice or roti in their meals and lose weight by controlling portions and staying active. The priority should be sustainable habits rather than rapid fixes.

Selal also advised steering clear of extreme diet trends. Weight management should not leave someone feeling weak or unhappy; instead it should support both physical strength and mental well-being. He reminded readers that individual responses vary and progress often takes time.

Many nutrition professionals share this view. Eliminating full food groups can have negative consequences. A balanced plate—vegetables, protein, healthy fats and carbohydrates—combined with regular activity is more practical and sustainable. Rice and roti remain valuable sources of energy and cultural comfort without needing to be removed entirely.

Selal’s takeaway is straightforward: weight loss should not be driven by fear or strict restriction but by understanding your body, eating mindfully and staying active every day.
