Dinesh Karthik, a former Indian cricketer and now a broadcaster, believes that Shubman Gill still doesn't fully understand what it means to lead the Indian Test team. After Rohit Sharma’s retirement, 25-year-old Gill has been named India’s new Test captain, and his first big challenge will be the five-match Test series against England, starting June 20.
Karthik shared his thoughts on the Sky Sports Cricket Podcast, saying that Gill might not realize how tough the job is. "I don’t think he has understood how big a responsibility it is to be India’s Test captain. He’s walking into the lion’s den," Karthik said. "Playing in England is never easy, even for teams with star players."
Karthik also pointed out that England’s bowling isn't as strong as it used to be, which could help Gill and his team. "The England bowling attack looks weak right now. That’s the only good thing for India. But England’s batting could still put pressure on us," he added.
England Struggles with Injuries
The England team is also dealing with some injury problems. Fast bowler Mark Wood will miss the first three matches, and Jofra Archer won’t play the opening game. Gus Atkinson is recovering from a hamstring injury, and his availability is still uncertain. This leaves England’s fast bowling attack looking thin, which could give a boost to the young Indian side led by Shubman Gill, especially as they play away from home.
