The Zamzam Well, famed as the world’s most significant well, holds immense spiritual value for Muslims everywhere. Situated in the Mataf area of Masjid al-Haram, this revered source is frequented by pilgrims undertaking Hajj and Umrah.
Reaching a depth of approximately 30 meters, the well features 12.80 meters of structured construction along with 17.20 meters hewn into the rock. Its diameter fluctuations between 1.5 and 2.5 meters, reflecting the varying levels of water.
Dating back to the era of Prophet Ismail, the history of Zamzam is intertwined with Islamic heritage. As per tradition, Prophet Ibrahim left his wife Hagar and infant son Ismail in a barren valley. In her quest for water between Safa and Marwa, Angel Gabriel struck the earth, releasing a stream of water. This miraculous event marked the well as a testament to Allah’s grace.
Over the years, the Saudi government has consistently upgraded and preserved the well, ensuring that millions can access Zamzam water safely.
In 1373 AH, King Abdulaziz bin Abdulrahman Al Saud implemented modern water pumps and connected reservoirs to facilitate distribution to 12 taps around the well.
Subsequently, in 1382 AH under King Saud, surrounding structures were removed to expand the Mataf area, relocating the well beneath the Mataf and transitioning from a bucket system to modern taps.
In 1399 AH, a significant cleaning initiative was ordered by King Khalid, where expert divers ensured enhanced water flow through advanced cleaning techniques.
During King Fahd's rule in 1424 AH, studies for the Grand Mosque expansion recommended covering the well to create space for tawaf and prayers.
Later, under King Abdullah, a comprehensive purification and bottling system for Zamzam water was introduced, involving modern automated processes for purification, monitoring, storage, and distribution.
Currently, under Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques Salman bin Abdulaziz Al Saud, advanced projects have further optimized Zamzam Well, achieving improved sterilization and impurity elimination through extensive environmental studies.
Today, Zamzam water that is supplied to visitors of the Grand Mosque and Al-Masjid an-Nabawi undergoes several purification stages. Raw water is drawn using giant pumps through stainless steel pipelines, ensuring distribution to millions of worshippers annually.
