The Special Investigation Team (SIT) of the Assam Police has submitted a chargesheet in a Guwahati court regarding the death of popular singer Zubeen Garg. The 52-year-old artist died on September 19 while swimming in the sea during a yacht trip in Singapore, where he had travelled to take part in the North East India Festival.
After more than 60 cases were registered across the state, the Himanta Biswa Sarma-led government formed an SIT and also appointed a one-man inquiry commission headed by Justice Soumitra Saikia of the Gauhati High Court. During the investigation, the police arrested several people, including the festival organiser Shyamkanu Mahanta, Garg’s manager Siddharth Sharma, two band members, and the singer’s cousin Sandipan Garg, a senior Assam police officer.
Garg’s two personal security officers were also arrested after investigators found financial transactions of more than Rs 1.1 crore in their bank accounts. The case, which was initially filed under sections related to criminal conspiracy, culpable homicide, and negligence, was later expanded to include murder charges under Section 103(1) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita.
The SIT questioned nearly 300 witnesses and even travelled to Singapore as part of the probe. Last month, Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma stated that Zubeen Garg’s death was not an accident but a clear murder, adding that one person directly carried out the act while others helped in various ways. He promised that a strong and watertight chargesheet would reveal a motive that would shock the people of Assam.
The Singapore Police is also conducting its own independent investigation into the incident. The case continues to draw major public attention as fans and citizens wait for more clarity on the circumstances of the singer’s death.
