South Africa took a big step forward in the Women’s ODI World Cup 2025 after a brilliant batting performance against Sri Lanka on Friday, October 17. The match, played at R Premadasa Stadium in Colombo, was affected by rain, but the Proteas still managed to chase down a revised target of 121 runs in just 14.5 overs without losing a wicket. This victory marked South Africa’s fourth consecutive win in the tournament.
Rain had already interrupted play, as persistent showers hit Colombo, causing delays in several other matches at the venue. Sri Lanka reached 46/2 in 12 overs before the game paused, with opener Vishmi Gunaratne forced to retire hurt after a blow to her knee.
Once play resumed, both teams had a maximum of 20 overs to bat. Sri Lanka tried to score quickly, with players Kavisha Dilhari, Harshitha Madavi, Gunaratne, and Nilakshi de Silva using big shots to reach 105/7. Despite the reduced overs, they made the match competitive.
Chasing a target of 121, South Africa’s openers, Laura Wolvaardt and Tazmin Brits, played carefully at first but then accelerated the scoring. They completed the chase smoothly in just 14.5 overs. Wolvaardt scored her 37th ODI fifty, while Brits reached her third ODI half-century. The winning runs came from a boundary and a six by Brits, which secured the victory and allowed the team to maintain their unbeaten streak.
This match also highlighted the strong partnership between Wolvaardt and Brits. It was their seventh century stand as opening batters in ODIs, now the joint-most in Women’s ODI history. Their teamwork and consistency continue to be a key factor in South Africa’s success.
With this win, South Africa equals their previous best streak in Women’s ODI World Cups, matching their four consecutive victories in 2022. The team has shown excellent form, both in batting and teamwork, and looks like a strong contender for the trophy.
Fans and analysts are watching closely as the Proteas continue their campaign, hoping they can extend their winning streak and make history in the Women’s ODI World Cup 2025.
