Top-ranked tennis player Carlos Alcaraz has withdrawn from representing Spain in the Davis Cup Finals in Italy due to a hamstring injury. The announcement came on Tuesday, with Alcaraz revealing that doctors advised him not to compete to prevent further damage. The Spanish star expressed his disappointment, calling the decision “heartbreaking” and stating that he had eagerly anticipated playing for his country in the prestigious tournament.
Alcaraz, 22, confirmed that he has an edema in his right hamstring, which prevents him from participating in the quarterfinal match against the Czech Republic in Bologna scheduled for Thursday. He took to social media platform X to share his decision, stating, “I’m so sorry to announce that I won’t be able to play for Spain in the Davis Cup in Bologna. I have an edema in my right hamstring and the medical recommendation is not to compete.”
The young tennis sensation added that playing for Spain has always been a source of pride for him. “I’ve always said that playing for Spain is the greatest thing there is, and I was really looking forward to helping us fight for the Davis Cup,” Alcaraz said. The withdrawal marks a significant setback for the Spanish team, which was counting on Alcaraz’s top-ranking skills to advance in the tournament.
Alcaraz’s absence comes as Spain faces a challenging quarterfinal match against the fourth-seeded Czech Republic. The Czech team boasts top-20 players Jiri Lehecka and Jakub Mensik, making the contest even tougher for the Spanish squad. Spain had earlier defeated the United States in the qualifying round in September, showcasing their potential, but Alcaraz’s injury complicates their prospects of reaching the semi-finals.
This year, Spain had hoped to go further in the Davis Cup, particularly after last year’s disappointing campaign. In 2024, Spain was eliminated in the opening round of the Final 8 at home in Malaga, which also marked the final match of tennis legend Rafael Nadal’s career. Alcaraz, who has long expressed a desire to win the Davis Cup, will have to wait for another opportunity to achieve his goal. He said, “I want to win the Davis Cup one day because, for me, it’s a really important, important tournament.”
The timing of the injury is particularly unfortunate, as Alcaraz was set to lead Spain in what could have been a breakthrough performance. His withdrawal underscores the physical demands of professional tennis and highlights the importance of player health and recovery. Spain will now have to adjust its lineup and strategy to compete against a strong Czech team without their leading star.
Despite the setback, Alcaraz expressed gratitude to his teammates and fans for their support and assured them that he will continue to work on his recovery. The Spanish Tennis Federation will monitor his rehabilitation closely, aiming to have him ready for upcoming tournaments and future Davis Cup matches.
