Spotify is projected to surpass analyst forecasts for its fourth-quarter results, driven by gains in paid subscribers, selective price increases and stronger user activity. The announcement sent the stock up about 5.3% in premarket trading.
The company has implemented higher fees for its premium individual plan and cut costs in areas such as marketing and staffing to boost margins. This report is the first since CEO Daniel Ek moved into an executive chairman role in January, with Spotify adopting a co-CEO leadership arrangement.
Product innovations are aimed at keeping listeners on the platform. Spotify recently launched a lossless, high-fidelity audio option for audiophiles, saw audiobook listening climb 36% year-on-year—particularly among younger users—and integrated OpenAI’s ChatGPT to provide conversational, tailored music and podcast suggestions.
For Q4, Spotify expects operating income of €620 million ($723 million), narrowly above analysts’ €618.6 million estimate. It forecasts revenue of about €4.5 billion, slightly below the €4.57 billion consensus. Monthly active users are projected at 745 million, beating the 737.3 million estimate, while premium subscribers are expected to rise by 8 million to 289 million, a touch under the 290.9 million predicted.
In the third quarter, premium subscribers rose 12% to 281 million and monthly active users increased by 17 million to 713 million, both ahead of expectations. Total revenue grew 7% to €4.27 billion, topping the €4.23 billion analyst projection.
Spotify’s mix of expanded offerings, engagement-driven features and pricing adjustments underlines its strategy to improve profitability amid stiff competition in the streaming sector.
