Sudan Landslide Destroys Village And Kills Around One Thousand

Post by : Mariam Al-Faris

A tragic natural disaster has struck Sudan. A huge landslide destroyed an entire village in the Darfur region, killing nearly one thousand people. This has become one of the deadliest natural disasters in Sudan’s recent history. The disaster shows the country’s struggle not only with civil war but also with deadly natural forces.

What Happened In Darfur

The landslide happened on Sunday in Tarasin village, located in the Marrah Mountains of Central Darfur. Heavy rains in late August caused the mountain soil to loosen. After days of rainfall, the land suddenly collapsed, wiping away the whole village. The Sudan Liberation Movement-Army, which controls the area, confirmed the tragedy in a statement released on Monday.

Village Completely Destroyed

According to the group, the landslide killed almost every single person in the village. The population was estimated at over one thousand people, and sadly, only one person is believed to have survived. The entire village was “leveled to the ground,” leaving nothing but mud, rock, and destruction behind. The group described the disaster as a shocking and painful loss of human lives.

Call For Help

The Sudan Liberation Movement-Army appealed to the United Nations and international humanitarian organizations to urgently step in. Their appeal included requests for help in recovering bodies, providing humanitarian aid, and offering support for survivors and affected families. However, reaching the disaster area is very difficult because of the ongoing civil war and the restrictions placed on aid groups in Darfur.

Sudan’s Civil War Complicates Relief

This tragedy comes at a time when Sudan is already suffering from a brutal civil war. Since April 2023, fighting between the country’s regular military and the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces has spread across Sudan. The capital city, Khartoum, and many other areas have been turned into battlegrounds. This conflict has displaced millions of people and created one of the world’s worst humanitarian crises.

Marrah Mountains Become A Refuge

The Marrah Mountains, where the landslide occurred, are a rugged volcanic chain stretching for about 160 kilometers (100 miles) southwest of El-Fasher. In recent years, the mountains have become a refuge for many families fleeing violence in the Darfur region. Displaced people believed the mountains were safer than the war-torn towns, but now the natural disaster has brought new suffering.

Inaccessible For Aid Workers

Because of ongoing fighting, the United Nations and international aid groups have very limited access to most of the Darfur region, including the Marrah Mountains. Roadblocks, insecurity, and government restrictions make it nearly impossible for them to reach villages like Tarasin. This means that survivors, if any, and the families of the victims may not get the urgent support they desperately need.

History Of Seasonal Disasters In Sudan

Sudan often faces heavy rains and flooding during the rainy season. Every year, hundreds of people die, and thousands are displaced because of seasonal floods. Homes and farmlands are regularly destroyed, worsening food insecurity. However, this landslide in Darfur is far more deadly than usual seasonal disasters, making it one of the worst tragedies of its kind in the country.

Human Loss And Grief

The landslide has left a deep scar on the people of Sudan. Losing an entire village in one night is an unimaginable tragedy. Families, homes, and communities were lost forever. With only one survivor, the pain and grief are even harder to bear. This loss is not just a local disaster but a national tragedy that will be remembered for years.

Need For International Attention

The landslide in Darfur highlights the urgent need for global attention to Sudan. The country is struggling with war, displacement, poverty, and now a large-scale natural disaster. Without international help, the survivors and affected communities may continue to suffer in silence. Humanitarian groups warn that Sudan is facing multiple crises at once, and tragedies like this show the importance of support from the global community.

A Tragedy Amid War And Crisis

The disaster in Tarasin village is not only a reminder of nature’s power but also of the suffering of people living in conflict zones. When war and natural disasters collide, ordinary people pay the heaviest price. The people of Darfur have already endured years of conflict, displacement, and hunger. Now, they face one of the worst natural tragedies in their history.

The landslide that wiped out Tarasin village in Darfur, Sudan, is a heartbreaking reminder of how fragile life can be in war-torn and disaster-prone regions. With nearly one thousand lives lost, it stands as one of Sudan’s darkest moments. The tragedy shows the urgent need for peace, stability, and international support to help Sudan face not only human-made conflicts but also natural disasters that bring unimaginable suffering.
