Super Micro Computer shares plunged more than 9% in premarket trade on Wednesday after the company failed to meet quarterly profit and revenue forecasts, attributing the miss to delivery postponements tied to last-minute design changes.
The California-based server maker said its "design win upgrades" pushed nearly $1.5 billion of what had been expected in first-quarter revenue into the current quarter, after a key client requested modifications to GPU rack layouts. CEO Charles Liang said the "complexity of the new GPU racks" demanded extra integration and testing time.
Super Micro has emerged as a major supplier in the AI server market, building high-performance systems used by hyperscale data centres. Its close work with Nvidia has helped it introduce new GPU platforms such as the Blackwell Ultra series early, supporting a roughly $13 billion order backlog and positioning the firm prominently in AI infrastructure supply chains.
Despite the short-term disruption, the company lifted its full-year revenue guidance to at least $36 billion from a prior $33 billion forecast, and projected second-quarter sales of $10 billion to $11 billion — well above the Street's $7.83 billion estimate.
Super Micro's stock has climbed about 56% year-to-date amid strong investor interest in AI plays. Still, analysts warn that aggressive pricing strategies and slim margins could strain sentiment as competition in the AI server space intensifies.
While the recent results disappointed investors, the company's strategic position in the expanding AI ecosystem remains significant, even as execution risks have become more apparent.
